John James Audubon Audubon drew birds from life whenever possible rather than from specimens alone. He did, indeed, shoot specimens that he wired and propped into life-like positions as models for his paintings. Of equal or greater importance, he spent much of his life traveling the continent observing the birds (and animals) in remarkable depth and detail. He studied the creatures in all of their plumages. He strove for action and reality; this was a new approach to the painting of birds.

C F Tunnicliffe Charles Tunnicliffe is widely recognised as one of the finest natural history artists of the last century.Since his death in 1979 several books about his work have been published, including the first book of his bird sketches, A Sketchbook of Birds', which was a revelation - and a bestseller.During his life, he wrote and illustrated only six books (although he was a prolific illustrator of others' work). Foremost among his books is undoubtedly Shorelands summer diary (1952), a masterpiece, and now a highly prized collectors' item.
