L28-34cm.Very like Slavonian grebe below but slightly smaller and very distinctive blunt forehead with horizontal top edge to bill shape.In summer plumage it appears black with straggly bush like golden plumes on the cheeks.In winter its Steep forehead and 'dirty grey' coloured neck distinguish it from the Slavonian grebe which shows a regular dark area to the back of neck only.
