In summer plumage unmistakable with redish-brown crest clearly visible.Distinguished from rare Red-necked Grebe in winter by much paler appearance.Breeding on shallow lakes with reed and other vegetation. Moves to larger open water / reservoirs and shallow sea bays in winter.Appears small in flight with very fast almost whirring wingbeats.
