Smallest of all the Palearctic grebes.Short neck with short blunt ended 'dumpy' body.Only indigenous grebe without ornamental head feathers or white wing patch.Pale and undistinguished in winter plumage when it will often be seen on coastal waters and estuary's.Breeding on small lakes and ponds with thick vegetation / reeds.Unmistakable bubbling vibrating trill call in breeding season sounds similar to female Cuckoo.
