120 species of crows, jays and their allies exist in the world today, many are exceedingly beautiful in colour, grace and form whereas others are black and sinister in appearance. In no other group of perching birds has evolution produced such a degree of variation, from the tiny Hume's Ground-Jay of the steppe-highlands of Tibet to the huge Thick- billed Raven of the mountains of Ethiopia. Some have had a long association with man and appear in tales of mythology and superstition, others have been regarded as agricultural pests. The great majority however remain largely unknown, their only contact with man being the destruction of their specialised habitats. As a consequence over 20 species are now regarded as internationally endangered, some before we know very much about them. The 30 superb colour plates by Hilary Burn depict them all; each plate is accompanied by an informative caption page summarising the criteria required to identify the species alongside colour world distribution maps. Some of these with such evocative names as the Banggai Crow, Mesopotamian Crow and Flores Crow have never been illustrated before. The authoritative text by Steve Madge treats each species in depth, summarising identification techniques and concisely reviewing all aspects of corvid behaviour, distribution, population and taxonomy. The author has had first-hand experience of most of the species during his travels throughout the world, travels in which he gradually became fascinated by this very special, but somewhat ignored, group of birds. Crows and Jays is a combination of scientifically accurate information and an identification guide, planned to give anyone, whether a birdwatcher or biologist, a greater under- standing of the lives of these beautiful, yet very complex, group of birds. it will surely be a standard work of reference for many years to come. mapFranklin Coombs. The European Corvids form a more varied and colourful family of birds than is often realised. The native British species range from the sleek black raven, crow and rook to the grey-headed jackdaw, red-billed chough , black and white magpie and multi-coloured jay. Equally striking are the continental species-the Alpine chough, azure-winged magpie, Siberian jay and nutcracker. This is the first book to be devoted entirely to these eleven species. Franklin Coombs, who has been studying the crow family for the past forty years, has distilled a vast amount of detailed research and has added the fruits of his own observations and fieldwork. The result is an authoritative and systematic, yet readable account of the life cycle and behaviour of each species :its field characteristics, a description of the adults, nestlings, juveniles and moult; distribution, posture and voice, and territory, nest site, nest building and eggs to fledging of young; roosting: predators, parasites, morbidity and mortality... Derek Ratcliffe. Illustrated
by Chris Rose "Few writers have captured all aspects of the raven in a single volume as personally and accurately as Derek Ratcliffe does in this wonderfully informative book."...Condor The Raven is one of the most spectacular and romantic of British birds, but relatively neglected in the modern literature of ornithology. This book sets out to redress this imbalance. The place of the Raven in Myth, legend and history is long established and this book describes its fall from grace as a valued scavenger in medieval cities to a persecuted outcast in the modern wilds. Today Ravens carry a new omen in the modern world, as a barometer of goodwill to wildlife. Like those in the Tower of London, the continued existence of Ravens in our wild countryside will be telling us something about both our current situation and our prospects for the future.

Bernd Heinrich.
In order to discover the truth about
the social habits of ravens, Bernd Heinrich, a field biologist at the
university of Vermont, spent four severe winters risking life and limb to
observe these mysterious birds in the woods of Maine. His adventures in
pursuit of his elusive quest read like a zoological detective story complete
with false leads, apparently contradictory clues, and finally, hard
evidence. From biblical times to our own, in legend and literature, the raven has played a significant role in the mythologies of nations, but there has never been a more intimate and painstaking portrayal of this most intelligent species than Heinrich's. His discoveries show scientific method in its most admirable and accessible form, and his exhilarating book is one that will appeal to all lovers of wildlife.
