mapDescription.-Length 9 inches.Distinguished from other British plovers by the white band across upper breast,with chestnut patch below it shading into black on the belly;crown blackish,with white stripe passing over the eye backward round the nape;upper surface ashy brown,with paler edges;chin and throat whitish;tail coverts and vent white.Young birds lack the white gorget,and have under parts dull white.Female rather larger than male.
