Guide to the Birds of the Falkland
Islands
Robin R Woods illustrated by Franklin Coombs
mapTo visit the sparsely inhabited Falkland Islands is rapidly becoming a holiday ambition for keen birdwatchers.Fascinating birds, many of them remarkably numerous and tame, can be seen in and around these sub-Antarctic islands.Commonly found around the coasts is the Logger,a distinctive, large and pugnacious flightless duck, the only endemic species.Penguins, albatrosses and shags breed in vast colonies while some offshore islands, covered in tussac grass, are teeming with birds of 30 or more species, including shearwaters and petrels. On the numerous ponds and lakes, birdwatchers may also see the shy, graceful Black-necked Swan and several species of ducks. The inland areas are thinly populated by birds, but these include the beautiful Rufous-chested Dotterel, the Turkey Vulture and around settlements,a brilliantly red-breasted Meadowlark.
This guide covers the identification of all 185 species recorded in the Falkland Islands or within 200 miles around the islands.Twenty-one colour plates with brief identification notes are all cross-referenced to the text where fuller descriptions and notes on behaviour, calls and distribution are given.A detailed introductory section describes the environment and recrds the history of ornithological and conservation activity.
