The Red Kite Milvus milvus

The red kite - its very name evokes a picture of wild valleys in Wales - a bird at one with the wind and the sky, soaring with effortless grace, manoeuvring by delicate flexing of an elegant wing or twisting its amazing red tail. It rises in widening circles on still wings, higher and higher, until it is almost lost from sight. A bird with a very special place in our hearts (it was once the commonest bird of prey in Great Britain, living alongside man and swarming over the heart of medieval London), the red kite now has a unique place in our history. In Wales it has been fiercely guarded for almost a century, continually plagued by persecution and nest robbery. Now the kite's fortunes are turning as attempts are made to reintroduce this rare and endangered bird to other parts of the British Isles, and to enable it to be seen by many more people. Here is The Kite's Tale, told by Roger Lovegrove, the man who, as the RSPB's officer in Wales, has been responsible for the Society's contribution to kite protection for 70 years. Roger Lovegrove

illustrated by Dan Powell.' Illustrated by Dan Powell and a series of colour photographs ,this book on one of Europe's most elegant birds follows roger Lovegrove's The Kites tale and updates the story. From the struggles to maintain a native population in Wales the book gets right up-to-date with the recent reintroduction projects that have been so successful. Ian Carter, in his role with English Nature, has been deeply involved with English Kite reintroduction projects and knows Kites well in the field. His knowledge and enthusiasm comes through well in the comprehensive text.....RSPB BIRDS
