Clancey has engaged in extensive original research over the years since I950 in order to make this account of the birds of Natal and Zululand and all the immedi- ately adjacent territories of south-eastern Africa as up-to-date and authoritative as possible. No work on South African birds since the early 1900's has given such detailed descriptions of each species, and much information, hitherto available only in museum and specialised ornithological publications, has been collected together in this volume for the first time. The author has followed closely the arrangement and findings on the birds of the province embodied in his own work A Preliminary List of the Birds of Natal and Zululand, published by the Durban Museum in 1953- In arriving at his conclusions he has thoroughly conned the pertinent literature, as well as studying the considerable collections of Natal and Zululand birds in both the Durban and Natal Museums. He has also personally undertaken the effective ornithological exploration of many areas in zoo- geographical South Africa with a view to arriving at a more accurate understanding of the composition of the extremely rich and arresting avifauna of the segment of south- east Africa dealt with in this work. The fine series of paintings of birds has been specially prepared by the author. It is hoped that ornithologists will find this work not only a valuable reference book but also a source of much pleasurable reading. Mr P. A. Clancey emigrated in 1950 to South Africa to take up the Curatorship of the Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg, and in january, 1952, assumed the Directorship of the Durban Museum and Art Gallery.(inside front cover)
