Identification guide to European Passerines

Lars Svensson

mapThis book deals with all passerines regularly occuring in Europe and some which are only rare vagrants. It is meant to serve as a handy reference book and reminder primarily to the ringer of fledged birds, but should also be of some help when studying skins in museums. It presents wing-formulae,measurements,plumage details and other aids that will help to identify sexes and ages, but also species and some characteristic subspecies. In writing this book, I have tried to base as many criteria as possible on my own experience.I have gone through close to 25,000 skins in various collections, mainly in Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet,Stockholm, but also in Naturhistoriska Museet,Gothenburg,Malmo Museum,Malmoe,Universitetets Zoologiske Museum,Copenhage,British Museum of Natural History etc.I have studied live birds trapped at the bird observatories at Ottenby,Oeland,SE Sweden, and on Capri,Italy....

207 species and about 50 subspecies are included in the third enlarged edition (Blue cover).Classification, sequence and nomenclature follow K.Voous.English names are in accordance with those in The 'British Birds' list of Birds of the Western Palearctic. Some of the species in this guide are very rare to European ornithologists;they are included because of their similarity to more common ones....
