A Season Of Birds
A Norfolk Diary 1911
mapAt the turn of the century (20th) a rich
Cambridge undergraduate,the Hon.Edwin Montagu,visited the Norfolk
Broads and befriended a local boy,Jim Vincent.Their excursions
together formed the basis of a friendship that lasted nearly
twenty years, cutting across the barriers of social position and
background.Later Montagu returned to Hickling for the shooting, and
Vincent,now his keeper,taught Montagu
the lore of the Broads. As his interest in the area developed,Montagu,by
now a minister in Asquith's government, decided to preserve a bird
diary kept by Jim Vincent in an unusual and delightful way.He
commissioned the eminent Edwardian bird artist,G.E.Lodge,R.A,to
illustrate it.This version of the book which has become a classic
was published in 1980.The 152 pages feature the work of G.E.Lodge,with
a map of Hickling Broad.Hardback.

The
HERONS
OF THE WORLD
James Hancock and Hugh Elliot
Paintings by Robert Gillmor and Peter Hayman
Herons
and bitterns form one of the most easily distinguishable (and
widely dispersed) families of birds.Their family,the Ardeidae,contains
many of the world's most graceful and interesting large birds, perennial
favourites of ornithologists and bird watchers.
In The
Herons of the World, two experts and two
artists have combined to offer both an authoritative review of
the family and a set of original and beautiful plates that should
serve for a long time to come as definitive portraits of the
exceptionally varied species that belong to it.
In the text,James Hancock and Hugh Elliot have drawn together and summarized what is now known of the heron family, relying on the observations of ornithologists from many countries and on their own wide-ranging experience of a majority of the species. For each of the 61 species that they recognise they have provided accounts of distribution, migration and habitat, general appearance and identification, and feeding and breeding behaviour.for some species additional taxonomic notes are also included.
The full-colour portraits of the birds by Robert Gillmor and Peter Hayman and the pencil drawings by Robert Gillmor make the book a work of art as well as an authoritative monograph.researched with meticulous care, the illustrations are often able to provide a visual hint of the birds' favoured habitats.
