'Field painting and
drawing is often the most direct way to make a statement on a
subject. Studio work is a different discipline, often governed by
demands beyond the artist's own satisfaction. The American market
demands a high degree of finish in its artwork, whereas in Europe
different strands of work can occupy their own niches in the
market. The ultimate indulgence is to paint and draw purely for
self-fulfilment and satisfaction, and not at the behest of market
forces'.
